5 timepieces inspired by the Year of the Snake

Parmigiani Fleurier

The lunar Year of the Snake holds a special allure in the watch industry, blending the art of horology with the rich symbolism of the Chinese zodiac.

The snake, celebrated for its association with wisdom, elegance and transformation in Chinese mythology, inspires luxury watchmakers to craft limited-edition timepieces featuring intricate designs and fine craftsmanship, with a nod to those fine characteristics.

The following selection of watches feature vibrant snake motifs, exquisite materials and unique artistry, paying homage to the zodiac’s cultural significance while showcasing the innovation and creativity of the world of fine horology.

1. Arnold & Son Perpetual Moon 41.5 Red Gold Year of the Snake

This exotic red gold timepiece embodies the Chinese zodiac attributes of perspicacity, intelligence and prudence perfectly, through a seamless integration of artistic finesse and technical prowess.

Limited to just eight pieces, its unparalleled craftsmanship features a hand-engraved 18karat rose gold snake entwined around a ginkgo biloba branch.

Set against a shimmering blue aventurine glass base, the snake appears lifelike, complete with intricate scales, forked tongue and a broad head.

The watch’s dial showcases a luminous mother-of-pearl moon surrounded by the constellations of Ursa Major and Cassiopeia.

These celestial elements, hand-painted with Super-LumiNova, underscore the historical significance of stars in navigation and their role in the Chinese zodiac calendar.

The manually-wound A&S1512 calibre is at the centre of everything, a testament to Arnold & Son’s commitment to precision.

This movement’s moon phase complication achieves remarkable accuracy, requiring a single adjustment only every 122 years!

Boasting dual barrels and a 90-hour power reserve, the calibre operates at a frequency of 3 Hz, ensuring reliable performance.

The movement’s aesthetic finishes, including rhodium-plated circular graining and radiating Côtes de Genève stripes, reflect the brand’s dedication to excellence.

2. Bvlgari BVS100 Lady Solotempo Automatic

Bvlgari has unveiled a defining transformation in its own iconic Serpenti legend.

As the Chinese calendar celebrates this magnetic astrological symbol, Bvlgari imbues its storied reptilian design with a new dimension: eternity.

Revered since ancient times, the serpent symbolises the universe’s cyclical rhythm and perpetual renewal.

With a svelte diameter of just 19mm and thickness of 3.90mm, the calibre accordingly weighs only 5g.

The rotor on the watch also features a Serpenti design signature – seven hexagonal “scales” shimmering just like actual reptilian skin!

At the heart of the timepiece is the BVS100 Automatic movement, an achievement born from years of meticulous development launched at the recent LVMH Watch Week in New York.

Designed, developed and produced entirely in-house, this calibre is tailored to the unique contours of the Serpenti’s iconic snakehead shape which can be viewed through the watches’ new exhibition caseback.

The “Solotempo” mark means the watch only features the reading of hours, minutes and seconds, offering an impressive power reserve of 50 hours.

3. Franck Muller Silhouette CX Snake

This magnificent watch’s overall design captures the snake’s enigmatic allure and fluidity, while paying homage to the creature’s sinuous motion.

With only 28 pieces available exclusively in the Asia-Pacific region, it is a testament to Franck Muller’s ability to reinterprete cultural symbols through exquisite design and craftsmanship.

Undoubtedly, one of the most captivating features of the timepiece is its emerald-encrusted snake motif that adorns the dial.

The snake symbolises mystique, transformation and rebirth, making it a powerful representation of the watch’s own artistry and craftsmanship.

Inside the watch’s Silhouette CX case, crafted from 18kt rose gold, is a dial that showcases Franck Muller’s unparalleled attention to detail, with numerals precisely arranged to align with the case’s irregular outline.

The dial also has a snake motif adorned with deep green emeralds, which captures a snake’s essence, symbolising both its elegance and mysterious nature.

Within the case beats the in-house MVT FM 2038 movement, a marvel of engineering tailored specifically for this asymmetrical design.

It is housed within a custom casing ring, ensuring seamless integration with the case’s unique structure.

This precision extends to its strap, featuring snakeskin-embossed texture in a rich serpentine green.

Ergonomically-designed to integrate with the case, the strap offers both comfort and a cohesive aesthetic that ties the entire piece together perfectly.

4. Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Xiali Chinese Calendar

Parmigiani Fleurier may have taken inspiration from “Xiali”, the age-old Chinese calendar that was first created over 5,000 years ago.

The watchmaker has given its own spin – the PF008 movement has its own Chinese calendar and a moonphase indicator – featuring a power reserve of 54 hours – within a polished and satin-finished 18kt rose gold case measuring 42mm.

Its signature fluted bezel, made of 950 platinum, is paired with a matching stainless-steel bracelet with folding clasp.

The applied hour markers and skeletonised delta hour and minute hands are crafted in 18kt gold with rhodium plating, while the second hand and calendar subdial hands are both made of rhodium-plated steel.

The watch displays all information on the dial, with the 12-hour subdial showing the name of the year on the first level and the corresponding animal on the second level.

The 3 o’clock subdial indicates if it is a long or short month, while the 9 o’clock subdial shows the month number.

Meanwhile, the 6 o’clock subdial features the blue aventurine moonphase display, showing the position of the moon in the northern and southern hemispheres.

5. Raymond Weil Millesime Infinite Burgundy Limited Edition

An ode to refined aesthetics and technical mastery, this watch, with its vibrant burgundy dial adorned with a sector finish, commands attention while the perfectly matched leather strap completes the monochromatic elegance.

Encased in polished stainless steel 39mm in diameter, it achieves a harmonious balance between contemporary design and timeless charm.

Limited to just 88 pieces, each example is also engraved with the script “ONE OF 88,” further highlighting that this exclusive creation is a celebration of artistry, precision and rarity.

The watch’s red-coloured dial and the auspicious limited-edition number 88 are obviously associated with good fortune in Chinese culture.

Inside the case beats the RW4200 automatic movement, offering 41-hour power reserve, a testament to Raymond Weil’s enduring dedication to Swiss horological excellence.

With a sapphire crystal on both the front and the caseback, the watch captures light with stunning clarity while also teases with a glimpse into the intricate movement within.

Water-resistant to 50m, the watch is also adorned with a fluted crown featuring the RW monogram. In short, this watch exudes both form and function.
